Operation O2: pavers, bricks and benches made from waste

What remains at the end of the chain will be able to come back into the city as building materials. Orders will also go to Kinshasa's makers.

At the end of the VIPRO chain, part of the waste can neither be recycled nor used as fuel. Operation O2 plans to turn it into materials the city can use. The name says it: a second life.

What is planned

  • Pavers for courtyards, pavements and the streets around schools.
  • Bricks, to build with the material the city used to throw away.
  • Street furniture: benches and fittings for squares and markets.

Orders for Kinshasa's makers

Orders will also go to the city's makers, so these materials take the shape of objects designed for Kinshasa and made locally.

Where the project stands

Operation O2 depends on the recovery plant, which will produce the residues. The first materials will come after it starts operating. We will publish every milestone here, with figures once they are validated.

The full journey of the waste is on the programme page.
